I Can’t Get My Car Started Could it Be the Mass Airflow Sensor

Yes, a dirty or malfunctioning mass airflow sensor can make it difficult to get your car, truck, or utility vehicle started. This auto part can last a lifetime if you take good care of your automobile. This does not mean that it is invincible, however. Auto Repair Technology lists the signs of the faulty MAF sensor below. Bring your vehicle to our shop at the first sign of trouble.

Acceleration Trouble

The MAF sensor keeps track of the engine’s air. If it is dirty or malfunctioning, it may report the wrong amount of air to the engine control module. Consequently, the module will make an unnecessary adjustment to the air in the combustion chamber. As a result, you may find it difficult to get your vehicle to accelerate from a stopped position or when you try to pick up speed.

Check Engine Warning

A dirty or malfunctioning MAF sensor will also turn on the check engine light because the engine is having problems. Consequently, the check engine light will not turn off until you have the mass airflow sensor cleaned or replaced.

Engine Hesitation

As with acceleration hesitation, your engine can hesitate, too, if it has too much air in it. You may notice that your engine stutters when you are driving at higher speeds, and it may feel as if the engine is going to stall. This can also be caused by problems with your fuel delivery system.

Engine Surging

In some cases, the bad mass airflow sensor may indirectly cause too much fuel in the combustion chamber. When this happens, you have a rich fuel mixture that the engine burns. This can cause your vehicle to pick up speed unexpectedly in spurts.

Excess Exhaust

This can also cause excess exhaust to flow out of your tailpipe. In the case of burning fuel, the exhaust will be black. You may have little puffs of exhaust or a ton of exhaust flowing out of the tailpipe. Either way, this is not normal in needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Idling Roughly

Your engine’s idling can also be affected by a problem with the mass airflow sensor. The idling can become rough and sketchy and, in severe cases, your vehicle may actually stall. This is an indication that there is an issue with the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber.
